According to her granddaughter, Susie Marvel, "Grandma once told me that she did not like her middle name Augusta, so her mother told her that she could pick out a new middle name, and she picked Gertrude. She told me something along the lines of her mother told her that since her middle name wasn't really recorded anywhere (Grandma adding that in those old days they didn't really keep track of things like that), she could just keep the new middle name." |

Despite the fact that Ella's father who emigrated from Germany never learned to speak English, he never allowed his children to speak German; he was insistent that his children would be "Americans." |

| Research | | R1 | Ella's parents are listed as William H. and Augusta (Eggebrecht) Hillman in some "Marvel" genealogy lists; Where did this information originate? While it is certain that the names listed above are correct does this hold a clue on Fredericka's family? Is it possible she had an additional name? (It was common to have three first names in Germany in this period.) | | R2 | Marriage license issued by Elkhart County, Indaina, yet family papers list marriage as in South Bend. Continue to look for newspaper account of ceremony, as well as determine address of brother. | | R3 | Did Ella really attend school? The sheets for the third generation were completed by various family members, the handwriting varying from form to form. Some of the sheets have later handwritten notes added. Based upon the dates and residencies listed the work appears to have been completed in 1955-1956. | | S195 | Unknown newspaper. [!DOC NOTES] | | S196 | , artist.
